Enola Holmes | Netflix | 2020

The Setting

The Victorian Era… 1884… Sherlock Holmes is still young, in his late 20s, I believe. I believe this timeline overlaps with Jack the Ripper. I don’t know if it is ever clearly stated in the universe, but I am not the only person to believe so.

Mycroft Holmes is the oldest brother and, of the three, the one I dislike the most. He is the MOST Proper of the siblings. He is the head of the family, and I think Sam Claflin plays him rather well.

Elona Holmes, the Film is set much more clearly against the backdrop of Voting Reform and Women’s Suffrage of the Victorian Era than many NeoVictorian media. This may be on purpose, as the main character is a young woman in her mid-teens.

I do not want to spoil the movie. So I am going to be vague. There are three plots in the Film.

  • What is happening with the Holmes Mother… We very quickly find out enough to make some leaps of logic.

  • The whole plot with the Viscount and his family members

  • Elona is the Victorian girl who refuses to fit into the mold that everyone appears to want her to be in. Can you say Highborn Tomboy.

The Characters

Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, the youngest sibling in the famous Holmes family. Part of the movie's humor is Enola does mild Fourth Wall breaks. I never thought that would work in a piece of Holmes Media… but it keeps a touch of humor even in the darkest parts. It also somehow endears Enola to me. But, of course, it might be partly because I love Deadpool as a character and concept.

Sofia Stavrinou portrays a younger Enola.

Henry Cavill is Sherlock Holmes, the second oldest of the Holmes siblings, a renowned private detective.

Mycroft Holmes is Sam Claflin, the oldest of the Holmes siblings, and a government employee who takes Enola in as his ward.
Part of me always sees Mycroft as the source of the M, Head of the Secret Service of James Bond fame. I blame Alan Moore (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). I don’t really see Mycroft as evil, just a control freak who wants the status quo to remain with his position and name growing stronger

Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, the matriarch of the Holmes family.

Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury, a young Viscount who Enola befriends.

Burn Gorman as, Linthorn, a hitman who targets Tewkesbury.

Adeel Akhtar is Lestrade, an inspector who knows Sherlock.

Susie Wokoma as Edith, an associate of Eudoria.

Hattie Morahan is Lady Tewkesbury, Tewkesbury's mother.

David Bamber as Sir Whimbrel Tewkesbury, Tewkesbury's uncle.

Frances de la Tour as, The Dowager, Tewkesbury's grandmother.

Claire Rushbrook as Mrs. Lane, the Holmes family housekeeper.

Fiona Shaw as Miss Harrison, the head of a finishing school Mycroft wants Enola to enroll in.

Ellie Haddington as Miss Gregory.
